A rare vintage Nupe water vessel, handcrafted by artisans of the Nupe people of Nigeria. Its surface is covered with finely incised geometric designs. Pots like this once stood inside Nupe homes on terracotta supports; the rounded base reflects their everyday use, often carried on the head cushioned by a cloth ring.
This example carries a lovely patina of age, with gentle wear and minor rim damage from daily use — overall in remarkably good condition, and a tangible link to the functional artistry of Nupe culture.
The Nupe live along the Niger River in Nigeria's middle belt. Predominantly Muslim, they retain echoes of older traditions and rituals, and are celebrated for their craftsmanship in leather, matting and brass. Vessels like this are sought by collectors and held in major museums worldwide.
