A hand-carved figure in dark wood, made by Nyamwezi carvers in Tanzania. Nyamwezi carvers are best known for thrones with circular feet, but also for figures like this one — elongated, with distorted limbs and eyes inlaid with white beads.
Figures of this kind were traditionally used in water divination, and danced in large numbers during harvest ceremonies, believed to promote new beginnings and growth.
