  • Makenge Tray, Zambia - (14.23)

This Makenge tray is a testament to the weaving skills of the Mbundu and Lozi people of Zambia. An original piece, traditionally used to winnow grains, now a beautiful decorative object.

How they are made: the trays are woven from the roots of the Makenge tree, a small tree that sends out very long, shallow roots. Only the small roots are gathered, so the bush stays alive to produce more for the future. The fine-haired roots are dug from the ground, thinned out, boiled and dyed with natural pigments, then left to dry. Each takes several weeks to make, so no two are alike, and sizes vary slightly.

Display on a table or plate stand, or add a small wire to the back to hang it on a wall.

    Size: approx. 40cm diameter × 4cm H.
