A small hand-carved Igbo mask from Nigeria, in the style of the southwestern Igbo. Masks like this appear at community celebrations, especially during the rainy season when, in Igbo belief, water spirits descend from the clouds to dwell among people — materialising as masqueraders who dance and strut through the villages. White-faced masks represent kindly female spirits; their darker counterparts are the mischief-makers.
A characterful wall or shelf piece with real cultural depth.
Size: H 30cm × W 13cm × D 9cm.
