A hand-carved Fang Ngil mask from Gabon
Hand-carved in the tradition of the Fang people of Gabon, whose white-faced Ngil masks are celebrated for their elegant abstraction of the human face — the heart-shaped hollow, the long tapering nose and serene, closed features. Worn by initiates of the Ngil society, the masqueraders would appear by torchlight after dark.
As a decorative piece it reads as pure sculpture — striking hung on a wall or leaned as a statement against a shelf or mantel. Hand-carved from wood, with the small variations in tone and finish of a genuine handmade piece.
