Fang Mask - 142.1

Fang people, Gabon/Cameroon — Ngil society mask

Worn by the Ngil men's society during initiation rites and the judgement of wrongdoers, the white-painted, elongated heart-shaped face was designed to appear by torchlight after dark — part ritual, part instrument of social authority. The Fang are equally renowned for their reliquary figures, a tradition this mask shares lineage with.

Origin: Fang people, Gabon/Cameroon  ·  Material: hand-carved wood
