Cameroon Shield Cowrie shell Flower

Cameroon — hand-carved beaded shield

A shield carved from a single piece of wood, finished with a flower motif worked in cowrie shells and beadwork, in the tradition of the Tikar people, who used sacred Baobab wood for shields displayed as a symbol of status and wealth, and carried in wartime as defensive weaponry.

As each is handmade, size and beading vary slightly piece to piece, mounted on a wooden stand.

Origin: Cameroon · Size: approx. 62cm H × 35cm W
