A characterful Fante Asafo flag from Ghana, hand-appliquéd in vivid layered cloth and held in our RareFinds collection. These banners belonged to the asafo — the Fante warrior companies — and were paraded to mark festivals, honour ancestors and trade pointed visual proverbs with rivals.
The piece is worked entirely by hand, its figures cut and top-stitched onto the ground cloth, giving it the warm, gently imperfect quality that distinguishes an authentic flag from a reproduction.
