A one-of-a-kind Asafo flag, handmade by Fante artisans in coastal Ghana. The asafo companies — community militias turned ceremonial brotherhoods — carried flags like this (frankaa) at festivals and funerals, each one a hand-appliquéd declaration of pride, rivalry and proverb.
Look closely and you can see the work: cloth cut, layered and top-stitched by hand, with the small variations that mark a genuine, individually made textile. Nothing about it is mass-produced.
A warm, characterful piece that sits as happily in a contemporary interior as in a more collected, layered room. From our curated RareFinds collection.
