An authentic Fante Asafo flag from Ghana, hand-stitched in bold appliqué and selected for our RareFinds collection. These banners were made for the asafo — the Fante warrior companies — and read almost like sentences in cloth, their figures and animals standing in for the Akan proverbs that asserted one company's standing over another.
Each shape is cut and layered by hand, giving the flag its tactile, slightly graphic-novel character. It's this blend of storytelling and craft that has earned Asafo flags a place in major textile collections.
