  • Baule Door (Anuan) Côte d’Ivoire - large

This Baule traditional door, known as Anuan, is embellished with carved motifs believed to facilitate the relationship between the living world and the spiritual — hand-carved animal, human and sometimes vegetation motifs. They were once used as entrance doors to courtyard houses.

One of the most common motifs is the carving of crocodiles and fish, carved with such detail that the composition feels three-dimensional.

These doors have been used, and there are naturally wear marks and scratches on the surface which add to their origin and old character. Where metal is present, it is where the owners repaired cracks over time. The doors are used for decorative purposes as stunning pieces of art.

Size: 200cm H including hinge section, 185cm H frame (not including hinge), 82cm wide.
