Among the most quietly beautiful pieces in our collection are our vintage Zulu pots from South Africa — handmade clay vessels with a history of real, everyday use long before they ever reached our shelves.

Shaped by hand, fired in the open air

Each pot starts as clay dug from local riverbanks, worked entirely by hand rather than thrown on a wheel. The maker builds and smooths the form, then fires it on an open-air pit rather than in a kiln — a method that leaves each pot with its own subtle variation in colour and surface, shaped as much by the fire as by the hands that made it.

Traditionally, these pots were made for storing and drinking beer, and that everyday function shows in the form: a rounded, wide-bellied body built to hold liquid securely, with the kind of practical, unfussy shape that comes from generations of pots made to actually be used.

No two pots are alike. Each maker's own hand and the unpredictability of an open fire mean every pot carries small differences in shade, texture and form — exactly what gives a handmade piece its character.

Genuinely vintage, not reproduction

These are old, used objects, not new pieces made to look old. Because of that, you may notice small cracks, chips or surface marks — signs of a real, lived history rather than a flaw to be hidden. We see that as part of the appeal: a pot that's been handled, filled and used for years has a presence that a brand-new copy simply can't replicate.

Living with one

We tend to treat ours as sculptural objects first — grouped on a shelf or sideboard, or stood alone on a plinth where the form and texture can be appreciated up close. A single pot makes a quiet, grounded statement; a cluster of two or three in slightly different sizes brings out just how much variation exists between pieces made by hand. Because they're old and porous, we'd treat them as decorative rather than for food or drink use today.

Every pot is a genuine one-off, with its own shape, marks and history.
