A hand-carved Marka double mask from Mali. The Marka are a Mande (Soninke) people settled in the Bamana region of south-western Mali, known for elongated mask faces sheathed in copper plates.
Along the Niger, the Marka use masks like this in ceremonies tied to fishing and farming. This piece is embellished with copper and fabric tassels. A striking, genuine piece of West African art.
