Fang people, Gabon / Cameroon — Ngil society mask
Worn by the Ngil men's society during initiation rites and the judgement of wrongdoers, this white-painted mask's elongated, heart-shaped face was designed to appear by torchlight after dark — an instrument of both ritual and social authority. The Fang are equally renowned for their reliquary figures, a tradition this mask shares lineage with.
