Zambian baskets are hand woven from the raw materials such as palm leaf, vines and twigs found in the local areas of the makers. Sometimes they make baskets from carefully stripped roots of some types of local trees, harvested in a sustainable way the trees are not damaged and the root can continue to grow on.
Weaving is such an important income source and way of life for the people in these rural communities. Youngsters learn the art of weaving to keep the family traditions of these intricate basketry skills going for future generations.
These baskets are a little different to the standard natural design, instead of the natural brown colours these baskets are woven with recycled plastics and paper creating an explosion of colour for any interior wall project.
