Hehe stool - Tanzania (04)

Hand carved wooden stool from a single piece of wood.  The Hehe stools are part of one of the most important pieces of furniture in Africa.  They serve as a social insignia corresponding to their social ranking.

The seat is the most important piece of furniture in Africa.  It serves as a social insignia because every person is entitled to a type of seat that corresponds to their social rank. These Hehe stools are generally 3 or 4 legged with a simple round polished top.

These traditional nomadic stools can be used as low seating, occasional tables or as a table-top accessory.

Across Tanzania many different groups of people make similar chairs/stools with great attention to detail in their carvings.
