Songye people, DR Congo — kifwebe society mask

Striated kifwebe masks were worn by the bwadi bwa kifwebe society to enforce social and political order, their carved grooves and bold colour-blocking marking out figures of authority. Male masks carry three-colour striations; this one's bold black-and-white banding recalls a zebra.

    Origin: DR Congo  ·  Material: hand-carved wood, pigment  ·  Size: 36 × 18cm
