A Dogon granary door from the Dogon people of the Bandiagara Escarpment region of Mali. Doors like this protected the window-like opening into each family's grain storage building, using a simple sliding door lock. Carvings of primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards and scenes of daily life symbolically protected the entrance, making it sacrosanct.
