A hand-carved Baule mask from the Ivory Coast, made for use in one of three traditional dances — the gba gba, bonu amaen or kplekple.
Used at ceremonies during the harvest season to celebrate beauty and age, double masks like this represent the marriage of the sun and moon, while the bonu amaen mask is believed to protect the village from external threats.
