A Bamileke elephant mask from Cameroon, made to be worn by members of the Kuosi society — a private men's society within the Bamileke community whose inner workings are closely guarded. A mask like this would have been worn by a high-ranking member.
The wonderful elephant-head form carries copious decorative flourishes, with brass tusks and a trunk end that beam warm golden tones. A striking, genuine piece of Cameroonian art.
Size: approx. 106cm × 45cm × 35cm.
