Bedu Mask - West Africa Ivory Coast (02) L

Notify me when this product is available:

West Africa - Ivory Coast representing Gurunsi people- these masks are used by dancers representing Bedu, an animal spirit that lives in the wilderness.
In legend the Bedu was discovered in the bush by a father who’s child was unwell and they took a journey to search for medicinal plant routes.  The Bedu is thought to have appeared from the woods and touched the child who was later cured of illness.  The animal then disappeared.

The mask is made from a flat plank of wood and is one of Africa’s largest masks.  Hand painted and is still used today in many festivities.
